More info

"Harry Belafonte’s Calypso was the first album in history to break all records by selling a million copies. We still remember his extraordinary success to this day and in this double CD Bruno Blum acclaims this achievement, covering the career of
the young Harry. We follow the path of this Black New Yorker of Jamaican origin who debuted with urban and intellectual folk before going on to the warmer rhythms of popular music from the Caribbean islands – mento and calypso."

- « Belafonte’s evolution » by Dirty Linen
The american-born son of a jamaican who worked as a chef for the British Navy, Harry Belafonte spent his formative years with his grandmother in Jamaica. It was an experience that would infuse the vocalist’s music. Comprising tracks from his first four albums, Calypso-Mento-Folk 1954-1957 explores Belafonte’s evolution from a singer of African-American folk songs (« John Henry », « Jump Down, Spin Around » and « Water Boy ») to embracing the music of the Caribbean and rising to international acclaim. The first disc shows hints of his future direction with an interpretation of King Radio’s 1930’s hit, « Mathilda ». Belafonte hits his stride with the second disc – combining his groundbreaking 1956 album, Calypso, the first album to sell one million copies, and its followup, Sings of the Carribean, released a year later. Collaborating with Irving « Lord Burgess » Burgie, a Brooklyn-born songwriter whose mother was born in Barbados, Belafonte sets off still-resonating ripples with such tunes as « Day O (The Banana Boat Song) », « Jamaïcan farewell », an « Man Smart (Woman Smarter).» CH – DIRTY LINEN
